Val Cantú's Californios is the first Mexican restaurant in the United States to hold three Michelin stars, a SoMa tasting menu that turns corn, chiles and masa into some of the most exacting cooking in America.

Californios began in the Mission in 2015 and moved to a larger SoMa home at 355 11th Street, where chef and co-owner Val M. Cantú runs a single tasting menu rooted in Mexican flavors and California produce. The room is dark, lively and hung with colorful art, closer to a party than a hushed temple. Masa is the through line, and Michelin's inspectors single out a sourdough tortilla carrying mezcal-battered black cod as proof of the kitchen's control. In 2026 the Guide awarded a third star, making Californios the first Mexican restaurant in the United States at that level, so book well ahead on OpenTable.
