Lazy Bear began in 2009 as David Barzelay's underground dinner party and settled into its Mission District home in 2014, and it still runs like one. Guests buy tickets on Tock, gather for snacks and cocktails in the mezzanine, then move downstairs to communal tables for the main menu. Barzelay and chef de cuisine Genoa Pieron cook nostalgic American flavors through foraged and farmed Bay Area ingredients, and while the menu turns with the seasons, openers like the Forager's Tisane and whipped scrambled eggs with bacon and maple keep returning. The restaurant holds two Michelin stars and a Wine Spectator Grand Award.
